Martha Stewart is a self-made woman who has made both friends and enemies during her life as the leader of an enormous empire. She has a reputation as a hard-as-nails businesswoman, but is also friendly with rappers. She has made millions, but served time in federal prison. Love her or hate her, Stewart is a fascinating character. Here are some lesser known facts about Martha Stewart.
She’s Frenemies With Gwyneth Paltrow and Blake Lively
Despite Stewart’s wealth and position at the top of her industry, she’s still competitive enough to try to crush the competition, even if they had a paltry market share. Gwyneth Paltrow has managed to build out a mini empire of her own with her goop.com site, but Martha couldn’t resist getting a few digs in at Paltrow’s expense. When Paltrow announced her divorce and called it “conscious uncoupling,” Stewart created a dessert called Conscious Coupling and printed it in the next issue of Martha Stewart Living Magazine. She also slammed Paltrow as ridiculous, stating ,”If she were confident in her acting, she wouldn’t be trying to be Martha Stewart.” Paltrow got back at Stewart by creating her own recipe, for “Jailbird Cake.”
Blake Lively is also on Stewart’s hit list. Lively’s attempt to start a lifestyle brand was a big failure, lasting less than a year. Stewart explained her opinion on the brand to The Huffington Post, calling it a “stupid” idea, and then saying again, “Why would you want to be me if you could be an actress?”
She Thinks Young People Are Lazy
Stewart is turning 76 soon, and she says she tries to relate with young people. However, she also said that young people are also very lazy in comparison to her own generation. “They don’t have the initiative to go out and find a little apartment and grow a tomato plant on the terrace,” she said exclusively to Luxury Listings NYC. “The economic circumstances out there are very grim. But you have to work for it. You have to strive for it. You have to go after it.”
Daughter Alexis Stewart Has a Rocky Relationship With Mom
Alexis Stewart has an infamously difficult relationship with her mother. Despite the two seeing each other frequently, Alexis hasn’t shied away from calling her own shots, even penning a tell-all about their relationship. In an autobiography entitled, Whateverland: Learn to Live Here, Alexis said her mother’s exacting perfectionism was hard to live with, describing her childhood as “I grew up with a glue gun pointed at my head.”
Although Stewart has made millions just from putting out saccharine holiday decorations, Alexis said she was a scrooge. Over the Christmas holidays, her mother made her wrap her own Christmas presents. Stewart was also the lady on the block who makes her house dark during Halloween, pretending not to be home.
Stewart hasn’t commented extensively on Alexis’s book, but she might counter with a few valid points. Would Alexis Stewart have gotten a book deal if her mother wasn’t Martha Stewart? Highly unlikely. And if we all had to make primping for the holidays our career, would we really be excited about doing the same at home? We’ll never know for sure.
People think of Martha Stewart as a prim and proper domestic goddess, always with the appropriate etiquette. But Alexis tried to put the kibosh on her mom’s reputation, claiming that she used to urinate with the door open. (How many busy moms have done that, I wonder, when their kids were young?
She Smoked With Snoop Dogg
Martha Stewart’s goody two shoes reputation is belied by some of her behavior behind the scenes. Comedian Jeff Ross said that she hung out and smoked dope with Ross and Snoop Dogg after the Justin Bieber Comedy Central Roast. In fact, the threesome got high during commercial breaks.
“She didn’t want to smoke directly,” Ross claimed in the Washington Times “I shotgunned one directly into her mouth. We only had one hit left. She was a great sport.”
She Has Shady Business Practices
Stewart is said to have shady business practices, but this is mostly based on her prosecution for obstruction of justice after she lied about a stock sale. Initially, people thought she pleaded guilty to insider trading, but that was not the case. It’s true that Stewart went to prison for five months, but she called herself a survivor. She allegedly quickly took charge of the entire prison, amassing a following and teaching crafts.
Despite her incarceration, Stewart made lots of money even while she was incarcerated. Forbes reported that Stewart became a billionaire (for the second time ) while she was serving time at Camp Cupcake. Shares in Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia skyrocketed another 90%, making her worth $1 billion.
