Do you ever have a quiet moment to sit down and read, only to find yourself reading the same sentence over and over again? If you are finding it hard to calm the mind, setting aside the mental load that plagues us day and night, to focus on the task at hand- you are not alone.
If you’re anything like me- reading as a teenager was an everyday occurrence- something to easily dive into and harder to pull away from. However, as I grew up, and the responsibilities kept piling on, I found it harder and harder to sink into the pages like I used to.
But don’t worry, there is a relatively easy way to dive back into your favourite books, fully invested and attention at the ready. All you need are a few alterations to your reading environment! Check them out below.
As screen time continues to rise in our society, it is more important than ever to be aware of the strain that is placed on our eyes. Therefore, make it as easy on your eyes when concentrating on that small print by choosing the right type of light. Find a light that is bright enough to illuminate the pages, but not too bright that it will strain the eyes. Experts recommend the use of halogen and fluorescent light bulbs for this reason.
The Right Support
Let’s face it, the older we get, the harder it is to find a comfortable spot and stay there for any length of time. Discomfort can be a massive inhibitor to concentration. Choose a seat that will provide you with enough support, ergonomically made, so it won’t leave your whole body sore after just a few hours of sitting.
Chairs with low backs and deep and wide seats can allow you to snuggle in and enjoy your book without feeling cramped. If you enjoy curling up with your little ones- an oversized chair or loveseat is a great idea. Comfort is, of course, a personal preference. So consider what’s comfortable for you, and ensure you sit in your favourite chair the next time you pick up a book.
Concentrating on the task at hand becomes infinitely easier with my weighted blanket wrapped around me, helping me tune out the rest of the world. I can dive into a book quicker, and stay within the pages for longer- without discomfort or distraction. So next time you plan on picking up that number one seller, consider making the above changes to improve your overall reading experience.
